We’re excited to launch the very first Hansby Internship Programme. This internship is designed for Year 12 or Year 13 Wakatipu High School students and will run from Monday 19 January to Friday 30 January 2026 on a fixed-term contract. Apply today!

Lakes District Council is at the very heart of a dynamic community. Our services are essential to the people in our region and include infrastructure development, community recreational facilities and planning, building and other regulatory services.

We’re proud to be QLDC, and in response to the growth the district has experienced over recent years, QLDC has itself experienced substantial growth. We genuinely believe in developing our people and providing them with all the tools and opportunities needed to succeed.

About the role:
We’re excited to launch the very first Hansby Internship Programme – a unique opportunity for one student to join Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) for a two-week internship. This programme has been made possible through a partnership with Wakatipu High School and the Hansby family.

You’ll be part of the Infrastructure Delivery & Engineering team, where you’ll gain hands-on experience and insight into how major projects in our district are planned, designed, and delivered. You’ll support the Engineering Manager, Senior Civil Engineers, Senior Construction Engineer, Infrastructure Engineers, and Project Managers in areas such as:
  • Helping with project planning and documentation
  • Supporting engineers with design and construction tasks
  • Learning about how infrastructure projects are managed
  • Getting exposure to real-world engineering challenges and solutions
  • Exposure to real-word site visits and an introduction to Health & Safety

This is a fantastic chance to explore what a career in engineering might look like, while working alongside experienced professionals who help shape the future of our community. At the completion of the internship, we’d like to see our successful intern complete a written report of the experience gained during this opportunity.
