We’re looking for a Land Development Engineer to join our hardworking Planning & Development team based in Queenstown. This is a great opportunity to help shape the future of the district, & a range of benefits are on offer so read more & apply now!

Lakes District Council is at the very heart of a dynamic community. Our services are essential to the people in our region and include infrastructure development, community recreational facilities and planning, building and other regulatory services.

We’re proud to be QLDC, and in response to the growth the district has experienced over recent years, QLDC has itself experienced substantial growth. We genuinely believe in developing our people and providing them with all the tools and opportunities needed to succeed.

About the role:
You’ll ensure privately developed infrastructure meets QLDC standards, supporting long-lasting assets and minimising maintenance costs for the community. Your work will involve technical engineering support in the assessment of engineering matters relating to resource consent land use and subdivision proposals to ensure risk to life or property is avoided, minimised or mitigated. With a focus on best engineering practices and risk mitigation, you’ll contribute to high-quality infrastructure projects and provide technical support for resource consent and development proposals.

Responsibilities of the role:
  • Providing technical advice on development proposals to ensure best engineering practices and minimise risk to the community and Council.
  • Assessing subdivision and development engineering applications for compliance with Council standards, best practices, and consent conditions.
  • Managing workflows to meet statutory timeframes and complete delegated tasks from the Manager of Resource Management Engineering.
  • Identifying and mitigating potential risks during the resource consent and design process, ensuring alignment with Council policies and legal requirements.

What we offer:
We are proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package that supports your health, wellbeing, and professional growth, including:
  • Southern Cross Wellbeing One Plan
  • Discounted membership to our health and fitness facilities
  • Hybrid working practices
  • Genuine commitment to your training and career development

What you'll bring:
With 5+ years of experience in civil engineering or surveying, you’ll bring strong time and project management skills, the ability to work independently after training, and exceptional communication skills for presenting to diverse audiences. You’ll excel at building and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships, presenting a professional image, and bringing innovation and meticulous attention to detail to every project. If you’re motivated, results-oriented, and ready to make a meaningful impact, we’d love to hear from you!

To best succeed in this role, you’ll have:
  • Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Surveying, or related discipline (and be eligible for professional membership).
  • Knowledge of 3 waters reticulation systems, roading and land management.
  • Sound knowledge of the RMA, Local Government Act and knowledge of related legislation desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge of NZS 4404:2010 Land Development and Subdivision Infrastructure
  • Previous experience working in a New Zealand Territorial/Consent Authority desirable but not essential.
